Where is Fitzrovia?

Fitzrovia is a friendly and vibrant neighbourhood in the heart of Central London. Over the years, the area has become a popular pull for advertising, media, film and television agencies. And it is no wonder, with its diverse dining scene, world class hotels, charming residential streets and village-feel atmosphere.

Conveniently located just a short stroll from London’s bustling West End, Fitzrovia lies north of Oxford Street and south of Euston Road, bordering Great Portland Street and Tottenham Court Road and situated close to Mayfair, Marylebone, Soho and Covent Garden.

An affluent neighbourhood, Fitzrovia is brimming with striking stucco townhouses and mansion blocks, all sitting side-by-side with modern residential developments, as well as an array of restaurants and bars.

The area is served by six tube stations: Great Portland Street, Warren Street, Euston Square, Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Road, and Oxford Circus. Marylebone, Euston, Charing Cross, Kings Cross, and St Pancras International mainline rail stations are also within walking distance. A number of bus routes operate, and there are several cycle hire stations here too.

The history of Fitzrovia

Fitzrovia is said to take its name from the Fitzroy Tavern, a public house on the corner of Charlotte Street and Windmill Street. Many a famous name is known to have frequented the watering hole, including Dylan Thomas, Quentin Crisp and George Orwell. The Fitzroy Tavern was named after Charles Fitzroy, who was responsible for developing a lot of the area in the mid-18th century.

The BT Tower opened in 1966, which at the time was the tallest building in London and renowned for its revolving restaurant at the top affording panoramic views of the city.

Between 1970 and 1990, Fitzrovia started to become a lure for a host of media agencies, and is today known as London’s hub of creativity, packed with numerous advertising, public relations, media, music, film and television agencies, all taking enthusiastic advantage of the stylish restaurant culture of the area and the many fine eateries of Charlotte Street.

Hotels such as the Charlotte Street and the Sanderson have further enhanced the creative reputation of the area, drawing in the rich and famous, from actors to sports personalities. And with Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street on the doorstep catering to retail demand, the independent tailors of Great Portland Street and Great Titchfield Street keeping everyone kitted out in their finest, and nearby Regents Park offering a vast stretch of lush green space, it really is no wonder that for the creative business seeking offices to let, Fitzrovia has become so popular.
